The Industry Standard for Severe-Service Sealing

A Closer Look at GYLON® Gasket Material

Three Garlock gaskets in different materials and configurations.

Not Sure Which GYLON Style You Need?

GYLON is offered in several styles, each engineered for a specific chemical environment and flange condition. Tell our technical team your media, operating temperature, pressure, and flange type, and we’ll recommend the right grade.

What is GYLON® Gasket Material?

GYLON® is a restructured PTFE gasket material: Garlock reorients the PTFE and fillers through a proprietary process that improves tensile properties and reduces the creep relaxation that normally plagues PTFE products. In practical terms, that means a gasket that seals tighter and holds bolt load far longer than conventional PTFE, with excellent chemical resistance across a wide range of industrial applications. It also delivers consistent results part to part, because the process creates a homogeneous material with uniform properties across the sheet, unlike skived PTFE that can vary from one side to the other.

Designed for severe chemical service, GYLON® gaskets are color-coded for easy identification and provide excellent sealability that reduces product loss and fugitive emissions. And because Garlock’s patented thermal bonding process can fabricate gaskets of nearly any size, large-diameter and custom shapes are no obstacle (one reason GYLON is treated as the benchmark for demanding sealing.)

How to Choose the Right Style

The right GYLON style all comes down to what you’re sealing and the condition of your flanges. Style 3500 is the universal first choice for chemical and petrochemical service, handling strong acids (except hydrofluoric), steam, solvents, chlorine, and cryogenics, and it conforms to FDA regulations. Style 3504 is highly compressible and suited to many acids, some caustics, hydrocarbons, and refrigerants, while Style 3510 is engineered for strong caustics and toxic media such as chlorine, ammonia, and phosgene, where an extremely tight seal is critical.

For damaged or low-bolt-load flanges, Style 3545 pairs soft, compressible outer layers with a rigid PTFE core to seal pitted, warped, or wavy flanges and many non-metallic flanges. For sanitary work, Style 3565 (ENVELON®) is an FDA-compliant grade used in medical, laboratory, power, chemical, and food service against solvents, moderate acids and caustics, hydrocarbons, and cryogenics. Most GYLON styles operate from roughly -450°F to 500°F (-268°C to 260°C).
